Photo Essay - Challenge the Dragon

Starting in 2008, Phil Mabey led the club to enter a dragon boat crew (known as "Walk on Water") in the Northumberland United Way annual fundraiser, Challenge the Dragon. Because club members are a versatile lot with many different interests and hobbies, the club was able to cobble together a decent crew with paddling or canoeing experience. In 2011, the team finished fourth out of thirty-three crews in the 200-meter and the 2000-meter races. And for the second year in a row it was the top fundraiser, contributing $3,365 towards a total of nearly $50,000 raised by the event. Afterwards, the team, helpers, and contributors enjoyed the traditional pot luck party. As usual the food was delicious, and the conversation lively with lots of laughs! In 2013 and 2014, our club team placed in the top three finishers and raised nearly three and a half thousand dollars - the top fundraiser of any entrant! More recently, in 2019, Ruth Farkas led the Pine Ridge Hiking team to a division win in the races, and the honour of top United Way fundraiser at Challenge the Dragon! Our club is proud of its on-going dedication and contributions to such a worthy cause! Photos by Laurie Robertson
