Bird's Eye View Game Farm

Submitted by: Darryl Russell

Hike reference: 9.5 km Centerton area, Diemo Road

1. There are three types of birds kept on the farm at 243 Stewart Rd., in Baltimore: Pheasant, Peacock and Guinea Fowl. It started as a hobby and just gradually grew, but has become a full-time thing since the farm owner (Bruce) retired. He raises several thousand pheasants at a time.

2. The pheasants have a plastic blinder pinned to their beaks which blocks straight-ahead view but not side-views. This is done because if they can see directly ahead, they might peck at other pheasants. If the pecking draws blood there will be an attack by the other birds on the bleeder, which can result in its death. Bruce said that, essentially, they are cannibals.

3. They are raised to supply private hunting reserves. Bruce owns one such preserve in the Colborne area, which is over 300 acres and has been in operation since 2001. As of August, 2025, the wholesale prices for pheasant are: 10 or less $18 each and 11 or more $15 each.

4. They enjoy splashing about in a muddy water hole, so holes are scattered throughout the pen. They also enjoy being in the rain.

5. Guinea fowl are also hunted but are known for zealously looking for and devouring ticks.

6. The peacocks are simply a beautiful bird that some people may want to purchase.

7. The perimeter of the fencing requires a metal screen on the ground around it, to prevent foxes and other predators (even feral cats) from invading the pen by digging a hole.
