Charles Smith Rutherford

Hike references: 8.0 km Wickow area and 12.5 km Wicklow Road




This hike passes by the former farmstead of Charles Smith Rutherford VC, MC, MM, a veteran of WW I. The farmstead is located at the southwest corner of Telephone Road and Highland Drive. The only remaining building of the farm is the barn located just north of Telephone Road on Highland Drive at What3Words.


Charles Rutherford was awarded a Victoria Cross, the British commonwealth’s highest award for military valour, for his actions in August 1918 when he singlehandedly disarmed an enemy position of 45 soldiers.
